“I love realistic space movies … I’m definitely a nerd,” reads Chris Birch’s answer on her profile page. That response proved prescient: shortly after stepping away from her professional cycling career, the Arizona native was selected from more than 12,000 applicants to join NASA’s astronaut class of 2021. The further she progressed with her application to join NASA, the more convinced she became that she had a future in spaceflight. “I really just had a blast,” Birch tells CNN Sport. “I absolutely would love to explore off this planet,” says Birch.

The disciplinary commission said it would not take any action following the incident. The ruling has annoyed Lyon, who said they would appeal the decision. On Nov. 2, the LFP announced the date for the rescheduled game, but no venue was named, with Lyon's director of football, Vincent Ponsot, calling for the game to be played at a neutral venue. The LFP has instead rescheduled the game for Marseille. Lyon are bottom of Ligue 1 with four points after 10 matches.

REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsPARIS, Oct 30 (Reuters) - France's government condemned on Monday "disgusting" weekend violence around the Olympique de Marseille soccer stadium and said nine people had been arrested after visitors Olympique Lyonnais' bus was attacked and their Italian coach injured. Sunday's Ligue 1 match between the arch-rivals of France's south east, who have a history of fan violence, was cancelled. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said nine people had been detained so far. Darmanin denied authorities had failed to prepare for the risk, saying 500 police officers were present.

Grosso, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, sustained facial injuries during the incident, leaving league officials to deal with another episode of rioting fans. Some preliminary round Olympic matches will be played in Marseille, where violence erupted at the 1998 World Cup between England fans and French police. Marseille condemned the behaviour of their fans in a statement on Monday. Lyon condemned their fans' behaviour after some were seen making Nazi salutes at the Velodrome. "OL firmly condemns the unacceptable racist behaviour of individuals in the stands on Sunday," the club said in a statement.

CNN —Lyon head coach Fabio Grosso was left “seriously injured” and with pieces of glass stuck in his head after projectiles were thrown at the soccer team’s bus ahead of a Ligue 1 game against Marseille on Sunday. “Coach Fabio Grosso and his assistant Raffaele Longo were directly hit and seriously injured in the face during this attack,” the club statement said. “We had a coach who’s got blood coming out of his head, he’s got pieces of glass stuck in his head, and he must have taken some contact to his head,” Lyon president John Textor told Prime Video Sport France about Grosso’s condition. Darmanin also said that, as well as throwing projectiles at the Lyon team’s bus, Marseille fans had also attacked opposing supporters. Fans wait to see if the match between Marseille and Lyon will go ahead.

Oct 29 (Reuters) - Sunday's Ligue 1 match between Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais was called off after Lyon's team bus was pelted with stones, injuring coach Fabio Grosso, as the players made their way to the Stade Velodrome. Sky Italia footage showed damage to two bus windows and Grosso being led into the stadium by two assistants. Italian media said Grosso suffered injuries to his scalp and face. "He can't hold a conversation, he had shards of glass in his face," Lyon's club president, John Textor added. "Because of a handful of thoughtless people, the party planned for this evening has been ruined, and 65,000 fans have been deprived of attending a football match," the club added.

'Different' Fiji exit World Cup proud to have fought to the end

"They've worked so hard since week one, 15 weeks now, and they've showed they belong on the world stage. "This is a different Fiji team and I think it's the start of something special. Sunday's match had echoes of Fiji's last World Cup quarter-final in 2007, when they fought back to level the match at 20-20 only to go down 37-20 to eventual champions South Africa. "The second thing was we needed to be more consistent in preparation, and I think what we've shown this year is that we've grown in that area. I think that's only going to grow as we go forward to the 2027 and 2031 World Cups."

MARSEILLE, France, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Owen Farrell was the official man of the match but not an England fan leaving the Marseille Velodrome is likely to have looked beyond Ben Earl for the outstanding player in England's 30-24 World Cup victory over Fiji on Sunday. "After we played Fiji at Twickenham we got told we wouldn't get out the group, but now we are in the semi-final, one of the best four teams in the competition. Jones preferred the bulk of Vunipola to the athleticism Earl brings to the role and Borthwick also took a while to be convinced. However, as a rare bright light in a dismal series of warm-up games the 25-year-old Earl forced his way into the starting team and has been superb at the World Cup. I don't like to pick out individuals after such a team effort today but he certainly played a big part."

CNN —Namibian rugby star Johan Retief has been ruled out of his country’s final World Cup game against Uruguay later Wednesday, after being “bitten by a spider” at the team’s hotel in Aix-les-Bains, eastern France. Johan Retief of Namibia wins the ball in a lineout during the Rugby World Cup match between France and Namibia at Stade Velodrome in Marseille, France on September 21, 2023. The team will also be missing its captain, Johan Deysel, who is serving a six-match suspension for a dangerous tackle during last week’s game against France, which Namibia lost 96-0. Namibia has lost all three of its 2023 World Cup pool matches, conceding 219 points in the process. The southern African side is not the only team to have lost a player through a non-match-related injuring during this tournament.

Coach Allister Coetzee has long targeted this fixture as the one to break his team’s unwanted record run of 25 consecutive losses in the World Cup since they made their debut in 1999. "The players know what a win means for the country, it can change a lot. Prop Johan Coetzee and wing Gerswin Mouton are therefore the only players to have started all four matches in France. Namibia lost 26-18 to Uruguay in Montevideo last month and Coetzee believes that elusive World Cup win is there for the taking.

In relation to Deysel's abuse, World Rugby said on Friday that they would "support Namibia in any way possible to stamp out online hate." MARSEILLE, France, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Rugby World Cup organisers hoped for a blockbuster opening weekend and they certainly got one, starting with host France's uplifting Friday night win and ending with a huge "what if?" moment in Sunday's classic Wales v Fiji encounter. "As the first weekend of the tournament comes to a close, the France 2023 Organising Committee would like to thank the French and international fans present across the country who kicked off the 10th Rugby World Cup," the hosts said in a statement on Monday. George Ford stunned the Pumas with three drop goals as he kicked all the points in a dominant 27-10 victory. GLASGOW, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Belgium's Lotte Kopecky underlined her status as one of the best all-round cyclists of her generation when she claimed a second track title at the UCI World Championships with victory in the points race on Tuesday. Earlier, Dutch dominance of the men's sprint events continued as the 30-year-old Jeffrey Hoogland claimed a third successive 1km time trial world title. Kopecky also won the elimination race earlier in the championships and will be one of the favourites for the women's road race which concludes the championships on Sunday. Hoogland also won the men's sprint alongside Lavreysen and both of them will be going for a third gold in the keirin which reaches its conclusion on Wednesday. Lavreysen retained his men's sprint world title on Monday.

GLASGOW, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Dutchman Harrie Lavreysen maintained his stranglehold on track cycling's sprint discipline as he made it five world titles in succession in the individual event on Monday. Ganna beats tech guru Bigham to pursuit gold

For Ineos Grenadiers road powerhouse Ganna, twice the road time trial world champion, it was consolation after Olympic champions Italy lost in the final of the team pursuit to Denmark on Saturday. "Thanks to Dan for an amazing battle in this velodrome," the 27-year-old Ganna said after claiming his seventh track world title, six of them coming in the 4km individual pursuit. Aerodynamics guru Bigham was part of Britain's gold medal-winning team pursuit squad at last year's track worlds and is eyeing next year's Olympics in Paris. He worked with the Denmark team pursuit squad that won the 2020 world title in Berlin in a then world record time. The pair shared a warm embrace after the race with Bigham saying they had a 'mutual respect' for each other's skills.

Leitao makes history with Portugal's first gold

GLASGOW, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Iuri Leitao made history when he claimed Portugal's first ever world title in track cycling by winning the men's omnium event in Glasgow on Sunday. With a comfortable cushion to take into the final points race, Leitao stayed out of trouble and held off the challenge of France's two-time omnium world champion Benjamin Thomas. Portugal has a pedigree in road cycling but, with only one velodrome in the country, track cycling is the poor relation. Now we have a lot of young riders so I think we have given a little bit of motivation for them. "And it's really good to be to be a world champion in giving the hope to the new generation."

Denmark also won the title in 2020 and were favourites going into the Olympics. Against the odds, Dygert back in old routine

Dygert, whose marriage to cyclist Logan Owen ended in divorce in 2020, has had three surgeries on her leg. Dygert has further opportunities to grow her medal collection in Glasgow, in the track team pursuit and then in the women's road time race and time trial. Aug 1 (Reuters) - The first edition of the combined UCI Cycling World Championships begins in Glasgow on Thursday with 11 days of high-octane action across virtually every discipline. Archibald, whose first ventures in track cycling were at the Glasgow velodrome, will be part of a British track team looking to flex their muscles ahead of the Paris Olympics. Britain were only fifth in the medals table at last year's track world championships in Paris with three golds -- the men's team pursuit, men's omnium and women's points race. Track world championships ahead of an Olympic Games can be cagey meetings, with the big nations sometimes reluctant to play their hands -- although the British team will be airing their cutting-edge Hope-Lotus track bike. PARIS, Feb 26 (Reuters) - World Cup foes Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe inspired Paris St Germain to a 3-0 win at bitter rivals Olympique de Marseille on Sunday to extend their Ligue 1 lead to eight points. Third-placed Monaco slumped to a 3-0 home defeat against Nice, who prevailed thanks to a Terem Moffi double and a superb half-volley by Khephren Thuram. The result left Monaco on 50 points, ahead of fourth-placed RC Lens on goals scored after the northerners drew 1-1 at Montpellier on Saturday. Messi beautifully lifted the ball into the path of Mbappe, who volleyed home with his left foot for his 16th goal of the season in Ligue 1. PSG next face Nantes at home before travelling to Bayern Munich for their Champions League last-16 return leg after losing the first encounter 1-0 at the Parc des Princes.
